This unique form of barn was developed during the 1800's for the specific purpose of drying hops, a viny plant that grew on tall poles. Hops were an important cash crop used in the making of beer up until the late 1920's when the advent of Prohibition made the raising of hops no longer profitable. Hops barns are unique in that they are tall and have a high loft for the drying of the green hops.

This hand-hewn hops barn dates to about 1860 and would make a wonderful, small house, guest house or office with its three levels. Its unusual height makes for tall rooms.

Below is a suggested floor plan for this barn frame. The actual barn is used for the main great room, kitchen and dining area. The bedrooms are built of new construction. The finished home has over 2600 sq ft of living space.
